Polyvore-ing my Closet

I have an idea.  I’m going to catalog my entire closet on Polyvore!  I’ve come across tons of adorable outfits on Pinterest that I realized I had a lot of components for in my closet.

Now, I don’t think this is going to be an easy process.  I have a fair amount of clothes, but I figure once I get through my existing stuff, it won’t be difficult at all to add new things.

I started by going through my closet and purging.  I know, this is not the fun part.  But, I read something somewhere that said to go through your closet as if you were shopping and decide on each piece by asking yourself if you had to hand over money for that article right now, would you buy it again?  That helps me to decide.  I used to look at my “old” stuff and feel like because I’d had it for so long, it might be time to toss it.  But, when I ask myself the “would I buy it again” question, sometimes the answer is yes and I feel good about keeping it.  I do purge my closet fairly regularly, so this step didn’t take very long.

The next thing I did was start cataloging what I have.  If you think purging is not fun, the cataloging is really not fun. I started searching for each  article of clothing on Google.  This worked ok, and is a good option if you can’t find the shirt/pants/skirt at the website of the store you bought it from.  After scouring Google for the first couple of things, I remembered I buy a ton of my clothes on-line and it would probably be easier to go back into my order history for my frequent flyer stores (like H&M and The Loft).  That was a little easier, but still fairly tedious.  And then there are things that I have had forever or have bought at discount stores like Marshalls who don’t have there products listed on-line.  I debated whether or not I should spend time finding the exact article, or if a close match would do.  In the end, I decided on a case by case basis.  If I can’t find it quickly on-line, a close approximation is fine, unless there is something particularly unique that I want to make sure I have documented.  An example is the coral blazer I bought from Old Navy like a million years ago.  I couldn’t find it on-line anywhere, so I just found one that was similar in shape and color.  In all I spent probably a couple of hours on the project so far, and I’m probably 10% through my existing closet.  So, this is something that will take some time, but I’m happy with the results I’ve achieved so far.  I’ve created three outfits so far with what I’ve added to Polyvore:

Inspired from Pinterest

You can see that each of those outfits is inspired by the ones I’ve found on Pinterest.  And I had all of those things in my closet!  I would never have thought to put those outfits together.

I can’t wait to find more inspiration from Pinterest and to continue the cataloging.  And maybe even put together some original outfits of my own on Polyvore.  I’ll be back with updates on this one for sure.
