#write31days – Organize Your Clothes

Tonight’s task in the Organize Your Home in 30 Days challenge is to organize your clothes and it’s the first one in a while that I was actually looking forward to.  I love clothes and I happened to have just organized my dresser a few weeks ago and I always keep up to date with purging clothes.  Mostly because I have a lot of clothes and only a finite amount of space to store them in.  Here is the before picture:

Closet Before

Woof.  So bad.  One giant problem I have with my closet is that I do not have doors.  If I had doors, I would be storing my shoes on the door.  But I don’t, so I have this disaster instead.  Here is my after:

Closet After

Much, much better, no?  I still need doors, I still need to go through whatever is in that tote on the left and I could use some upgrades, like a light in there and maybe something to make it a little prettier.  This will work for now, however.  And here’s why:

1.  There’s enough room for everything.  It’s definitely full, but not over filled.  And that is because I purge 2-3 times a year.  Are you not a great purger?  There is a secret question that will make you a great purger.

The Secret to Decluttering

Would you plunk down hard earned money to buy that shirt that doesn’t fit, or the skirt with the loose hem or the shoes that kill your feet?  I use this question every time I purge and it works great.  Mostly because sometimes I do say yes to the things that might be a little small or out of style.  If something is special enough, but needs a repair, or if there is something sentimental to me, I can say yes to that question and not feel bad about it.

2.  The clothes are categorized by color.  This helps me find things in the morning and it also gives me an idea of what I have and what I don’t have.  For instance, in that entire closet, I have one red shirt.  So weird.

I know my after is not beautiful, but it is functional.  I see some closet re-dos on lots of blogs and they look gorgeous.  So gorgeous, that they are kind of intimidating to me.  I can tell they are usually somewhat expensive and, right now, for me, the closet isn’t somewhere I really want to spend any money.  Not on fancy hangers, not even on doors at the moment.  Someday, definitely, but not when I have windows, siding and a roof to save for.  The moral of the story is, do what you can with what you have.  If you can’t make it beautiful, make it functional
