5 Minute Summer Face

This summer so far has been a whirlwind of pools, hiking, museums, mini golf, basketball and softball.  It’s the first summer in many years that I’ve been home with my kids and I wanted to make it fun, but not too crazy. We are laid back kind of people, so I didn’t want to run my kids ragged with events, but I wanted them to have something fun to look forward to each week.  It’s taken some planning and it’s been almost as busy as when they are in school, which means that I’m still always in a time crunch.  Every few minutes counts when I’m trying to get the house cleaned up, the kids fed, dressed and ready for the day.  At the same time, I hate leaving the house looking like a hot mess.  I’ve pretty much mastered a Five Minute Summer Face routine that has helped.  It’s really the same make up routine that I use all year, but I’ve swamped out a couple of things that weren’t holding up well in the summer heat.  ***This post contains affiliate links.  If you click one and make a purchase, I may receive a commission at no additional cost to you.  Thank you for supporting Lifestyle for Real Life.***

So, I’m going to show you a before and after pic at the end, but before you get to that, I want to say something about what my intention is with this 5 minute face.  I want to leave the house looking just slightly polished and not like I woke up five minutes ago.  I’m not going for anything fancy, just sort of fresh faced forty something mom who’s ready to take on the day!  Ok?

5 Minute Summer Face

Step 1:

COVERGIRL Smoothers Lightweight BB Cream Light to Medium 810, 1.35 oz

Tinted Moisturizer/BB Cream – I love a double duty item and BB Creams are that plus one.  This BB Cream from Cover Girl is sunscreen, moisturizer and a light foundation.  It has just enough color to cover up some imperfections, but you’re not going to leave the house looking caked in makeup.  Perfect for summer.

Step 2 & 3:

Bella Pierre Flawless Complexion Kit MEDIUM

Concealer/Foundation – I like to think I can skip this step.  I can’t.  I get puffy, blue-ish under eye circles no matter how much I’ve slept and this concealer does a great job covering those up.  I dab a little under my eye and sort of blend it in.  If my eyes are particularly puffy, I make sure to dab it underneath where the puffiness is so that the shadow that the puff creates (yes, my puffy eyes create their own shadows) is lightened up.  I love the concealer that comes with this kit from bellapierre.  It has a thick, but not too thick, consistency.  I dab it on any blemishes or dark spots on my face that might have popped up, too.  Then I grab that cute brush that comes with the kit and sweep on the mineral foundation.  This helps blend everything together and give a final polish to the whole face.  We’ll be coming back to the blush product in this kit, too!

Step 4:

Waterproof Eyeliner – I actually tried a bunch of different waterproof eyeliners hoping to find one that would stay on if I put my head underwater.  I have not found one of those yet, however, I wore this Maybelline Lasting Drama eyeliner to the pool a couple of times and I can tell you it did not make it through dunking my head, but it held up great on a day that I went in the pool without dunking.  So it is waterproof in that it holds up to things like humidity, an odd splash of water or tears.  Eyeliner is something I don’t ever want to leave the house without.  I actually left mascara out of this 5 Minute Face routine because for me, eyeliner is more important and I think it holds up better than mascara in the heat.  Plus, I have long-ish dark lashes anyway, so on a regular old summer day, mascara can look like overkill for me.  Eyeliner on the other hand makes my eyes look awake and younger.  It definitely adds that polish factor.

Step 5:

e.l.f. 48 Color Little Black Beauty Book

Define the Brows – I love this Little Black Beauty Book from Elf.  There are tons of pretty eye shadow colors in there if you feel like playing around with that, but for the Five Minute face, I pick about a shade darker than my eyebrows (which are light and sort of patchy) and use one of those brushes to fill them in a tiny bit.  I actually don’t love the look of a super done brow ever, but definitely not for everyday.  I really lightly fill in any spots that seem to need it and smudge in if necessary.  I definitely go for very subtle on the brows, but if I do nothing, they sort of fade into my face which is not a good look.

Step 6:

Bella Pierre Flawless Complexion Kit MEDIUM

Blush – We’re back to the bellapierre kit again.  Just a quick sweep of the blush onto the cheek bones, a smidge on the forehead, eyelids and down the nose.  Just a tiny hint of color here, people.  Tiny bit.  Especially in the summer when you’ve probably got a little color anyway.

Step 7:

Lipstick – A swipe of lipstick and I’m out the door.  If I wanted to make this a thirty second routine, I would swipe eyeliner above my eye and slap on some lipstick and dash out the door. This long lasting lipstick from L’Oreal in Volcanic is a pretty and very bright color for summer.

And that’s it, I’m ready to face the day.  I’m realizing that you might have read through all of that and thought, there’s no way that takes five minutes.  Honestly, each step is about 30 seconds.  You can totally do this in 5 minutes, I promise.

And I also promised a before and after.  I hate putting my face on the blog, but here goes:

Not a major difference, but it’s enough that I look sort of evened out and defined.  The under-eye area makes the biggest difference, I think.

So tell me, what am I missing?  Maybe some Crest Whitestrips…
